The budding German cannabis industry | DW Business

Germany has legalized cannabis, and now a new industry is taking off across the country. But there's a catch. Under the German law, marijuana is not available for commercial sales itself. Nevertheless, many advocates see the decriminalization as a first step and of course there's all the infrastructure needed for growing weed. We turn to one cannabis technology company, Dirk's Grow Shop, to find out more about how the legalization has lit up their business.

Germany’s Cannabis Boom: A New Era for Growers and Consumers

Germany has officially entered a new era of cannabis legalization, allowing adults over 18 to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis and grow up to three plants at home. The move, which took effect on April 1, was met with celebration across the country, with smoke signals rising over Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

For businesses like Dirk’s Grow Shop, which specializes in greenhouse technology and cannabis-growing kits, the law has already sparked a surge in demand. "We are facing a steep increase in orders," said Dirk, who has been in the industry since 2011. While selling cannabis remains illegal, Germany’s cannabis social clubs—nonprofit organizations that can grow and distribute marijuana—are emerging as a key part of the market.

Industry experts predict the law will significantly reduce black market sales by giving consumers access to safer, regulated products. "If people grow for themselves, that’s the best quality assurance," Dirk explained. Meanwhile, discussions continue on whether Germany will fully legalize commercial sales in the future, unlocking a potential €4 billion market.

For now, cannabis cultivation is flourishing, and businesses like Dirk’s are seizing the opportunity to expand. With further regulatory changes on the horizon, Germany’s cannabis industry is just getting started.
