SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. [WBRC] - Law enforcement and health officials are sounding the alarm about a dangerously potent form of cannabis known as “Moon Rocks,” recently discovered during a Birmingham drug bust. This powerful product is gaining attention for its extreme THC levels, posing serious health and legal risks to users—especially teens and young adults.
Moon Rocks are created by combining cannabis flower with hash oil, then rolling it in kief (a concentrated cannabis powder). The result is a highly concentrated substance with THC levels reaching 50% or higher—far surpassing the potency of traditional marijuana.
“This isn’t the marijuana from the 1960s or ’70s,” said Lt. Shane Plyler, executive director of Compact, a drug prevention coalition. “This is the equivalent of smoking 50 joints at once. The effects can be intense—and dangerous.”
Although Moon Rocks haven’t officially been found in Shelby County, Compact officers report a rise in THC-infused products across the region. They say it’s only a matter of time before Moon Rocks start circulating locally.
Officials warn that high-THC products like Moon Rocks can trigger severe side effects, including hallucinations, paranoia, anxiety, and even psychotic episodes—especially in individuals with mental health conditions like depression or schizophrenia.
“Just because a friend had a good experience doesn’t mean you will,” said Investigator Jamel Allen of Compact. “This stuff affects everyone differently, and sometimes dangerously.”
Beyond health concerns, Moon Rocks can also carry serious legal consequences. Depending on the amount and intent, possession could lead to misdemeanor or felony drug charges. This is especially true for products bought from unregulated sources, such as street dealers or questionable vape and CBD shops.
“If you don’t know what’s in it,” Plyler said, “it’s safest to just stay away.”
Authorities are urging the public—especially parents and teens—to stay informed and cautious as potent cannabis products become more accessible. Staying educated on the risks can help prevent dangerous situations before they start.
