North Carolina Lawmaker Pushes for Marijuana Legalization
A Mecklenburg County lawmaker has introduced House Bill 413, aiming to legalize the sale, possession, and use of marijuana in North Carolina. Representative Jordan Lopez, the bill’s sponsor, acknowledges the proposal faces significant challenges due to the Republican-controlled legislature but hopes it will spark discussions about legalization.
The bill would allow adults over 21 to possess and grow limited amounts of cannabis at home. It also proposes state-regulated cannabis sales, with local governments overseeing operations. Despite the push for reform, Lopez admits his Democratic affiliation may hinder the bill’s progress.
Some business owners remain skeptical about the bill’s impact on the industry. Michael Sims of Crown Town Cannabis argues that the 2018 federal Farm Bill already permits many cannabis-related products. He believes a better approach would be clear, uniform regulations across the state with accurate labeling, age restrictions, and licensing requirements.
House Bill 413 is currently in committee but has yet to be scheduled for a hearing or vote.
