New Mexico Cracks Down on Bootleg Marijuana Disguised as Hemp
A four-month investigation has uncovered a troubling scheme in New Mexico—local retailers selling illicit marijuana disguised as hemp. These bootleg products, falsely labeled as legal hemp, pose both legal and safety concerns.
Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Lewis is pushing for stricter enforcement, calling for a ban on synthetic cannabinoids exceeding 0.3% THC. His proposed ordinance would empower law enforcement and the Environmental Health Department to issue penalties, revoke licenses, and require clear signage prohibiting the sale of intoxicating hemp products.
At the state level, lawmakers are also taking action. The House recently passed a bill granting the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board authority to regulate hemp products, aiming to curb illegal sales and protect consumers.
With growing legislative efforts, New Mexico is taking a firm stance against deceptive cannabis sales to ensure public safety.
